South Africans Vote in General Election - 2004-04-14

Voting is under way in South Africa's general election, and no major problems have been reported.

The head of the Independent Electoral Commission says the election is proceeding well throughout South Africa. Brigalia Bam says she is delighted with the early turnout of voters.

"We hear there were people at some stations as early as five o'clock this morning," she said. "So it's amazing - both young and old - amazing, young and old, which is really a fantastic thing."

Some 20 million voters were eligible to vote, and Ms. Bam said earlier she expected a high turnout.
