Clashes between Bangladesh police and anti-government protesters in the capital, Dhaka, have left at least 20 people injured.
The clashes occurred during an opposition-sponsored general strike Wednesday. Many shops and schools were closed and transport services were paralyzed by the strike.
The day-long work stoppage is being sponsored by the main opposition Awami League and 13 allied parties.
The opposition's campaign of street protests and general strikes is calling for the resignation of Prime Minister Khaleda Zia's coalition government. The opposition accuses the government of corruption, incompetence and authoritarianism.
The strikers also are calling for the government to take action against the increasing cost of consumer goods. Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters.
