British Historian To Be Tried in Austria on Charge of Denying Holocaust

Controversial British historian David Irving is to go on trial in Austria Monday on charges of denying the Nazi Holocaust during World War II.

Irving has been in custody since November when he was arrested for allegedly denying the Holocaust at meetings in Austria in 1989. He faces up to 10 years in prison for his public denial, which is illegal in Austria.

The 67-year-old Irving has written a number of controversial books including Hitler's War, in which he challenges the extent of the Holocaust. He says Hitler knew nothing about the extermination of some six million Jews and actually tried to protect them.

Over the years, Irving has lost several legal battles over his views.
