Japan, Saudi Arabia Score Wins in World Cup Asia Qualifier

Japan and Saudi Arabia have scored wins, but Kuwait has been knocked out on the final day of Asian qualifying for next year's World Cup football (soccer) tournament in Germany.

In Yokohama, host country Japan scored a 2-1 win over Iran to win Group B with 15 points. Iran finished with 13 points and both teams are guaranteed berths in the World Cup.

In Group A, Saudi Arabia scored a 1-0 win over South Korea to take the group title with 14 points. Both teams have earned berths in the World Cup.

Also in Group A, Uzbekistan scored an upset win over Kuwait, 3-2, in Tashkent to earn a berth in the third-place playoff. The result gave Uzbekistan five points in the group standings and sole possession of third place. Uzbekistan plays Bahrain, which lost its final qualifier, 3-2, to North Korea but finished in third place in Group B with four points.

The Uzbeks play Bahrain in a home-and-away series with the winner playing a two-match series against the fourth-placed team from the North, Central America and Caribbean region for a berth in the World Cup.
