In Major League Baseball, the defending champion Boston Red Sox edged Toronto, 6-5, Friday, spoiling the Blue Jays' home opener.
Jason Varitek and Trot Nixon each hit home runs for the Sox, and Boston pitcher Bronson Arroyo won his first start of the season.
Elsewhere in the American League, the Mariners' Raul Ibanez hit a two-run shot in Seattle and Willie Bloomquist drove in two runs in a 9-6 win over the Texas Rangers. The lead changed five times before Ibanez' homer put the Mariners ahead for good in the eighth.
Other AL winners Friday were the Orioles, Indians, Devil Rays, White Sox and Royals.
The Baltimore Orioles crushed the New York Yankees, 12-5, the Cleveland Indians edged the Detroit Tigers 4-3, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays beat the Oakland Athletics 3-2 in 10 innings and the Chicago White Sox beat the Minnesota Twins, 5-1. Also, the Kansas City Royals knocked off the Los Angeles Angels, 6-2.
In the National League, the San Francisco Giants blew a six-run lead over the Colorado Rockies, but came back to win, 10-8, on a walkoff, three-run homer by Marquis Grissom in the bottom of the ninth.
Milwaukee's Junior Spivey drove in two runs in the 12th inning as the Brewers beat the Cubs in Chicago, 6-3.
The St. Louis Cardinals rallied for a 6-5 win over the visiting Philadelphia Phillies, losers of their last three games.
Other NL winners Friday were the Braves, Marlins, Astros, Dodgers and Pirates.
The Atlanta Braves topped the New York Mets, 3-1, the Florida Marlins blanked the Washington Nationals, 9-0, the Houston Astros slipped past the Cincinnati Reds, 3-2, and the Los Angeles Dodgers edged the Arizona Diamondbacks, 8-7. Also, the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the San Diego Padres, 3-2.
