US Soccer Team Coach Names Preliminary World Cup Roster

U.S. National Soccer team manager Bruce Arena has named 30 players to the training camp roster that will prepare for a series of friendly matches leading up to the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

Sixteen-year-old Freddy Adu is one of the players who will join national team regulars Landon Donovan and Eddie Johnson at the National Training Center in Carson, California on January 4.

Adu, who has played on the U.S. under-17 and under-20 teams is making his first appearance at the senior national team camp. All but one of the players, Heath Pearce of FC Nordsjaelland in Denmark, plays in Major League Soccer. Arena will select 23 players for the World Cup roster, and expects about half of them to come from the MLS.

The United States has friendlies against Canada in San Diego on January 22, plays Norway on January 29 in Carson and faces Japan February 10 in San Francisco.

The United States has been drawn into World Cup Group-E along with the Czech Republic, Italy and Ghana.
