Cuba, US Cooperate to Return Kidnapped American Children

An American couple accused of kidnapping their two children from their legal guardians is in U.S. custody after Cuba allowed U.S. authorities to land a plane in Havana and retrieve them.

Fugitives Joshua Hakken, Sharyn Hakken and their two young sons returned early Wednesday to Tampa, Florida, after a week on the run. Cuban authorities say they informed the United States they had located the fugitives on Sunday and handed them over to American authorities shortly afterward.

The two boys are being returned to their maternal grandparents, who recently won legal custody of the kids. Joshua and Sharyn Hakken are charged with kidnapping, interfering with child custody and child neglect.

Cuba and the United States share no extradition agreement to guide cases in which fugitives escape to the other country.
