New research, from German and US scientists, suggests that the mass production of atmospheric oxygen, 2.4 billion years ago during the “Great Oxidation Event” may have been boosted by a growing day length, due to a slowing down of Earth’s rotation, from the tug of the Moon’s gravity. They propose that the extended day length gave the ocean’s cyanobacteria additional daylight to photosynthesize and produce more oxygen.
