Officials: Russian Embassy in Libya Attacked

A Russian foreign ministry spokesman says gunmen tried to enter the compound of Russia's embassy in Libya and that shots were fired.

The spokesman says that based on preliminary reports, no Russian diplomats were injured in the embassy attack Wednesday in Tripoli. He says details of the incident are being clarified.

There have been a number of attacks on Western diplomatic missions in Libya.

In April, an explosion at the French embassy in Tripoli wounded two guards and caused extensive damage. Libya called that attack a "terrorist" incident.

A terrorist attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi on September 11, 2012 killed the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans.

Libya has struggled with instability and violence since the ouster of long-time dictator Moammar Gadhafi in late 2011.
