A press freedom group says 2013 was a deadly and dangerous year for journalists, with Syria the most dangerous place on Earth for reporters.
New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists says in its annual report Wednesday that 70 journalists were killed around the world last year and more than 200 jailed.
It says 29 of those deaths came in Syria, where media personnel have been kidnapped and others have fled the country.
The committee says Iran and Iraq are also dangerous places and that press freedom in Egypt deteriorated most. It says Egypt is now the third deadliest country for journalists, behind Syria and Iraq.
The report says Russia and Turkey became more repressive last year and that Hong Kong is no longer a safe haven for reporters writing about mainland China.
The CPJ says there have been negative trends in press freedom in some of the more democratic African countries including Kenya, Liberia, South Africa, Tanzania, and Zambia. It also warns of possible repercussions on the free flow of information in the United States because of revelations of spying by the National Security Agency.
