Hundreds of protesters in Sudan's North Kordofan state stoned a government convoy after accusing government officials of failing to protect them from a rebel strike a day earlier.

About 300 youths gathered in the town of Um Rawaba to protest a visit by governor Murghani Hussein Zaki-Adeen who came to inspect the town following Saturday's attack.

The crowd also set fire to several local government buildings.

No injuries or serious damage were reported in either of the incidents.

Rebels from Sudan's war-torn Darfur region say they launched Saturday's attack as part of there plan to overthrow the Sudanese government.

Um Rawaba is North Kordofan's second-largest city. The state has largely been free from the rebel activity taking place in Darfur to its west and South Kordofan to the south.

Residents of Um Rawaba said armed rebels looted a market after moving into the city in at least 20 vehicles. Sudan's army also accused the insurgents of destroying a communications tower, a power plant and at least one fuel station.
