Pakistan Says 76 Militants Killed in Airstrikes

Pakistan's military says recent airstrikes targeting suspected militants along the country's northwestern border with Afghanistan have left 76 of them dead.

An official statement said the strikes took place Tuesday in and around the Datta Khel area of North Waziristan tribal district.

It said the military targeted six terrorist hideouts, an ammunition dump and seven explosive-laden vehicles. It added that foreign fighters were among those killed.

Pakistan's army launched a major counter-militancy offensive in the Waziristan area last June. It claims the offensive has killed more than 2,000 militants while the army has lost nearly 200 soldiers.

However, it is impossible to verify details of the fighting from independent sources as media is barred from the border region.
