The United States plans to name its first ambassador to Somalia in more than 20 years.

Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Wendy Sherman made the announcement Tuesday at the U.S. Institute of Peace.

She said the Obama administration decided to reinstate an ambassador in Somalia based on its deepening relationship with the country and the "faith that better times are ahead."

U.S. President Barack Obama has not said who he will nominate for the position. The United States has not had an ambassador in Mogadishu since it closed its mission on Jan. 5, 1991.
