Fourteen people have been killed and at least 30 others injured in a bus accident in southeastern Kenya.

Witnesses and police say the accident occurred Tuesday in the Yatta division of Machakos district, east of the capital, Nairobi.

They say the bus rolled over when the driver apparently lost control of his vehicle.

About 3,000 people die every year in traffic accidents in Kenya. Statistics show that buses and small-scale transport vehicles known as "matatus" account for most of the casualties.

The government has introduced a compulsory seat belt law to cut the number of traffic fatalities.
