China's official media say a mudslide in southwestern Yunnan province Sunday has killed at least 20 people and left about 42 missing.

The official Xinhua news agency said that a torrent of mud and rocks hit near Chuxiong city in the afternoon.  The agency quoted local officials who said the number of people killed is still uncertain.

The mountainous Yunnan region has been pounded by heavy rains in recent days.  The report said officials are still investigating the causes of the mudslide.
