The U.S. military says joint U.S. and Afghan security forces killed 35 militants and wounded 13 others in eastern Afghanistan.

A U.S. statement says the militants ambushed an Afghan-led patrol in Zabul province early Thursday, before coalition troops returned fire and called in airstrikes.

The statement says coalition forces provided medical treatment to wounded militants before taking them into custody.

No coalition troops or civilians were reported hurt.

Elsewhere in eastern Afghanistan, government officials say unidentified gunmen kidnapped a Turkish engineer near the city of Khost Thursday.

Authorities say the unidentified engineer works for a construction company and no one has claimed responsibility for his disappearance.

In southern Afghanistan, one NATO soldier and two British troops were killed Thursday in separate explosions.
