The Canadian government says six Canadian soldiers have been killed in a roadside bomb blast in southern Afghanistan.

An Afghan interpreter also died in the attack Wednesday.

Canada has some 2,500 troops in Afghanistan as part of a NATO force.  The Canadian troop mission ends in February 2009.

In other news, the German Foreign Ministry says a German citizen is believed to have been kidnapped in Afghanistan.

Ministry spokesman Martin Jaeger told reporters the man has been missing since June 28.  Jaeger says the government has set up a crisis unit to investigate.

It was unclear why the missing man was in Afghanistan.  The ministry says he was not working for the German government, a relief agency or the media.
