Afghan President Hamid Karzai's running mate in Saturday's presidential election escaped unhurt when a bomb exploded near his convoy in the northern city of Faizabad.

Authorities say vice-presidential candidate Ahmad Zia Masood was in the capital of Badakshan province for an election rally.

They say at least one person was killed in the blast Wednesday - the latest incident of violence in the final days of campaigning.

At a campaign rally in the southern town of Ghazni Tuesday, President Karzai told some 10,000 people the election gives Afghanistan an opportunity for peace and stability.
