Miley Cyrus' new album, Breakout, sold 371,000 copies its first week of release resulting in a Number One debut on the Billboard 200 (week ending August 9). Only Mariah Carey has sold more in an opening week this year. Her album, E=MC2, moved 463,000 copies. Entering in the Number 2 spot this week is Sugarland's deluxe fan version of Love On The Inside, which sold 314,000 copies. The album debuts at Number One on the Top Country Albums chart.
Sinatra serves as inspiration for Ne-Yo's new CD
On August 5, Ne-Yo's new album, Year of the Gentleman, will be released. In a recent interview with Billboard magazine, the R&B star said the inspiration for the album came from Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr. and other crooners. "Years ago, if you weren't wearing the right suit or have a correct crease in your pants, you couldn't even get in the door - let alone on stage to perform," he says. "For me, the sharpness of Sammy and Sinatra is the kind of style I strive for in clothes and music. 'Year of the Gentleman' is named in honor of those guys."
Sting, Alanis Morissette among artis featured on Tibet charity album
The Art of Peace Foundation is releasing the charity album Songs For Tibet via iTunes on August 5. "This album will focus people's attention on the importance of Tibet, the gifts of its culture, and the crisis the Tibetan people are facing today," explains Michael Wohl of the Washington, D.C.-based foundation. Sting, Alanis Morissette, John Mayer, Jackson Browne, Vanessa Carlton and Dave Matthews are among the artists featured on Songs For Tibet. Proceeds from the album will go to support peace initiatives and Tibetan cultural preservation projects important to the Dalai Lama. The CD will be available in record stores beginning August 12.
The Police reunion tour nears end
The Police will perform their final show ever on August 7 at New York's Madison Square Garden. Proceeds will go to two public television stations in New York. The band launched its reunion tour in May 2007. Last year, they played to nearly two million fans and grossed more than $212 million to become the Number One tour of 2007. Before calling it quits on August 7, the Police will perform in Holmden, New Jersey on August 3 and at Jones Beach in Wantagh, New York on August 4 and 5.
Alicia Keys and Jack White to collaborate on new Bond movie theme
Alicia Keys and Jack White of the White Stripes will record the theme song for the next James Bond film, "Quantum of Solace." The track, called "Another Way To Die," is the first duet to be included on a Bond soundtrack. Quantum of Solace is scheduled to be in U.S. theaters on November 7. The soundtrack will hit stores on October 28.

Ozzfest invades Dallas, Texas
On August 9, the 2008 Ozzfest will take place in Dallas, Texas. In addition to the festival's founder Ozzy Osbourne, performers include Metallica, Hell Yeah, System of a Down's Serj Tankian, Sevendust, Jonathan Davis of Korn, among others. Drummer Vinnie Paul will lead an all-star tribute to his late brother, Pantera guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott, who was murdered during a December 2004 performance in Columbus, Ohio.
Baltimore hosts Virgin Mobile Festival
The 3rd annual Virgin Mobile Festival will be held on August 9 and 10 at the Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland. Headliners include Foo Fighters, KT Tunstall, Kanye West, Bob Dylan, Nine Inch Nails, Jack Johnson and Stone Temple Pilots. An online contest to showcase an unsigned band resulted in the Los Angeles-based group Hollywood Undead getting a spot on the festival stage. The group received 53% of the more than 540,000 votes.
Britney, Mariah nominated for MTV video award
Nominations in two MTV Video Music Awards categories have been announced. The Best Female Video nominees are Britney Spears for "Piece of Me," Mariah Carey for "Touch My Body," Jordin Sparks for "No Air," Katy Perry for "I Kissed A Girl" and Rihanna for "Take A Bow." The Best Male Video category includes Usher for "Love In This Club," T.I. for "No Matter What," Flo Rida for "Low," Chris Brown for "With You" and Lil Wayne for "Lollipop." Fan votes determined the nominees. Two additional categories will be voted on at vma.mtv.com each week through the end of August. The 25th annual MTV Video Music Awards will take place in Los Angeles on September 7.
Jordin Sparks, Jesse McCartney preparing for joint concert tour
Pop singers Jordin Sparks and Jesse McCartney will begin a co-headlining tour on August 5 in Sacramento, California. They'll perform in 15 other cities before wrapping up shows in Greensboro, North Carolina on August 30. Sparks, who won the 2007 American Idol competition, will support her self-titled album. It features the hits "Tattoo" and "No Air." McCartney is promoting his third album, Departure.
