African Union mediators have presented a new ceasefire proposal to the warring parties in Sudan's Darfur region.

Mediators said Sunday the proposal would end all military activity on relief supply routes and in camps for displaced people. It also calls for the government and rebel forces to withdraw to clearly defined areas with buffer zones in between.

Spokesmen for the government and rebels say they have received copies of the new proposal, and are studying it.

Three years of war involving rebels, government forces and government-backed militias in Darfur have killed an estimated 180,000 people and driven two million others from their homes.
