An Azerbaijani youth activist has been hospitalized after a two-week hunger strike to protest the expulsion of two university students.

Officials in Baku say Emin Huseynov is in critical condition.

Three other students have also taken part in the fast to protesting the expulsion of the two for what the strikers call their political convictions.

The Associated Press quotes a spokesman for Azerbaijan's Education Ministry, Bayram Huseynzade as saying the two students were expelled because one failed exams and the other had disciplinary problems.

The expelled students were members of Azerbaijan's Maqam youth movement.
