A Bush family spokesman says Barbara Bush, the mother of the U.S. president, is "resting comfortably" Wednesday in a Houston, Texas hospital after undergoing surgery for a perforated ulcer.

In a statement, the spokesman said the 83-year-old former first lady was visiting with family members today and is likely to leave the hospital next week. She was taken there Tuesday after complaining of abdominal pain, and was operated on that night.

The spokesman said doctors closed a one-centimeter hole in her stomach caused by the ulcer.

At the White House today, President George Bush said he is thankful that his mother is "doing well."

In an interview with ABC television earlier, President Bush's wife, Laura, said Barbara Bush is "doing great."

The current first lady said the White House doctor spoke to Barbara Bush's doctor this morning. Laura Bush said she and the president talked to Barbara and former President George H.W. Bush late Tuesday.

The former president was with his wife at the hospital.
