In the Major League Baseball playoffs, the St. Louis Cardinals have taken Game 1 of their best-of-seven National League Championship Series against the Houston Astros, 5-3.

Left fielder Reggie Sanders blasted a home run for the Cardinals in the first inning Wednesday. Sanders also drove in two runs for St. Louis. Game 2 is later Thursday, also in St. Louis.

In the American League Championship Series, Chicago third baseman Joe Crede drove in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the host White Sox to a 2-1 victory over the Los Angeles Angels. The best-of-seven series is now tied, 1-1. Game 3 is Saturday in Los Angeles.

The league champions will meet in the World Series beginning October 22.
