A Peruvian rescue team has recovered the bodies of three U.S. mountain climbers who disappeared in the Andes last week.

Authorities said Monday the bodies were found in a mountain crevice near the city of Yungay, about 350 kilometers north of Lima.

It was not immediately clear what happened during the climbers' attempt to scale the Artesonraju peak.

The Associated Press reported that Kathy Yoder, the mother of two of the climbers traveled to the area to help in the search.
