German Winfried Schaefer has been fired as Cameroon's football coach.  His dismissal comes on the heels of Cameroon's disappointing performance Wednesday in its 3-0 loss against Germany in Leipzig.

However, Schaefer said Thursday morning that he had not been informed that he was out of a job.  Cameroon Football Federation president Mohamed Iya had told journalists that Schaefer's time was up, that he could not be retained.

Schaefer was hired by Cameroon in September 2001 and led the team to the 2002 African Cup of Nations title.  But the team has struggled since then and is in jeopardy of failing to qualify for the 2006 World Cup.

Schaefer said his team had been unsettled over failed payments before the Germany match.  Schaefer has reportedly not been paid for several months.
