A top official in Colombia says the country's largest Marxist rebel group targeted President Bush for assassination when he visited Cartagena this past week.

Defense Secretary Jorge Alberto Uribe said the government has information that members of FARC [the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia] were instructed to make an attempt on Mr. Bush's life.

The president stopped in Cartagena November 22 on his way back from the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation summit.

During his four hour visit, he praised Colombian President Alvaro Uribe for making progress on restoring security in the South American country.

Both the White House and the Secret Service have declined to comment on the assassination plot.
