Colombian officials say government troops have killed at least seven insurgents and captured a huge rebel weapons cache in the south of the country.

Colombian military chief General Carlos Alberto Ospina said Tuesday the weapons stockpile was discovered during a military operation in the remote Guaviare province and the seizure is one of the biggest in years.

He said the arms included grenade launchers, mortars and large machine guns capable of taking down low-flying helicopters or small aircraft.

General Ospina said the weapons had been used by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, also known as FARC.  The marxist rebel group has been battling the government for some 40 years, funding their war through the drug trade and kidnapping.
