Stanislav Gross
Embattled Czech Prime Minister Stanislav Gross says he will resign once his Social Democratic Party is successful in putting together a new coalition to lead the country.

After a party meeting in Prague, Mr. Gross said the Czech ambassador to the European Union, Jan Kohout, is the Social Democrats' choice to succeed him.

Scandal has surrounded Mr. Gross since questions were raised about the financing of his luxury apartment, although he denies any wrongdoing. Amid calls for the prime minister's resignation, the Christian Democratic Party withdrew from the government last week, costing Mr. Gross his parliamentary majority.

He told reporters Saturday the Social Democrats hope to ally themselves again with the centrist Christian Democrats and the rightist Freedom Union Party to form a majority government.
