A Democratic Party lawmaker has called for the Republican-led Congress to repeal tax breaks for big oil companies.
In the Democrats' weekly radio address, Representative Bart Stupak of Michigan accused Republicans of ignoring alleged price gauging by oil companies.
He noted the rising gasoline prices in the United States come as big oil companies are making huge profits. He called for the development of alternative types of fuel, and for aggressive policies to prevent price gauging.
President Bush on Friday expressed concern about rising gas prices, but he said there was no evidence of over-pricing. He called for investment in renewable sources of energy and the development of alternative sources of energy.
