British Prime Minister Tony Blair says the apparent disintegration of the Taleban in Afghanistan has vindicated the US-led war on terrorism there.

Prime Minister Blair said he is pleased with news that the Taleban in Afghanistan apparently have agreed to surrender their last stronghold in Kandahar. "It seems that the final collapse of the Taleban is now upon them," he said. "That is a total vindication of the strategy that we have worked out from the beginning."

Mr. Blair said the world will be a safer place without the Taleban supporting thousands of terrorists on Afghan soil.

The prime minister also cautioned that there are what he called "huge challenges" remaining to sort out Afghanistan's political future and to take care of its humanitarian needs.
