Turkey wanted to play England at home in the latter part of the qualifying competition. England wanted the Turkey match earlier in the campaign. England will now host Turkey in April of 2003.

Tensions were heightened between the two football associations after two English fans were killed in Turkey when the club Leeds met Galatasaray two years ago.

Meanwhile in group 6, Spain takes on Greece on the opening day of qualifying in September. Northern Ireland kicks off its qualifying campaign against Spain in October. Group 2 features an all-Scandinavian game when Norway plays Denmark.

In group 3, the Czech Republic will have its final home qualifier against the Netherlands in September of 2003. The Dutch team defeated the Czechs in their opening match of the 2000 European championships.

UEFA was forced to use a draw for four of the 10 Euro 2004 groups when the various football associations could not agree on a match schedule. The qualifying campaign begins in September with the finals taking place in Portugal two years later.
