World number one men's tennis player Roger Federer of Switzerland has reached the semifinals of the U.S. Open in New York.

The two-time defending champion defeated American James Blake, 7-6, 6-0, 6-7, 6-4, Thursday on Arthur Ashe court. The two players have met five times with Federer winning all the matches.

Federer next plays seventh-seeded Russian Nikolay Davydenko, who earlier survived a battle with German Tommy Haas, 4-6, 6-7, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4.

The other men's semifinal has American Andy Roddick taking on Russian Mikhail Youzhny for a place in the final on Sunday.
