Firefighters and officials in Ghana are sifting through the charred remains of the country's foreign affairs ministry, after a fire gutted the building late Wednesday.

The fire broke out after most workers had gone home for the day.

The blaze quickly engulfed the 10-story building -- burning up documents, computers and other equipment.  Witnesses Thursday described the ministry's remains as a "skeleton."

Local media say firefighters battled the flames for hours and that one of the crew was injured by falling debris.  He was the only known casualty.

There are reports that many important documents were lost in the blaze.  Foreign Minister Alhaji Mohammed Mumuni said the fire has "serious implications" for Ghana.

The cause of the fire is still not known, but authorities are investigating.
