The Russian football club CSKA Moscow has reached the semifinals of European football's UEFA Cup tournament, even though it lost a second-leg quarterfinal to Auxerre of France.

The Russian club had a 4-0 lead over Auxerre after the first-leg match so Thursday's 2-0 loss was meaningless.

CSKA advanced on a 4-2 aggregate score and will face Parma of Italy in the semifinals.  The Italian club advanced on the away goals rule after playing Austria Vienna to a scoreless draw.

AZ Alkmaar of the Netherlands reached the semifinals after holding Villareal of Spain to a 1-1 draw in Alkmaar.  Kenneth Perez gave AZ the lead in the eighth minute and Villareal did not equalize until 18 minutes from time.

Alkmaar plays the Portuguese club Sporting Lisbon, which shocked Newcastle of England, 4-1, at Lisbon's Alvalade Stadium, the site of this year's final. The semifinals are scheduled for April 28 and May 5.  The final is scheduled for May 18.
