Four teams have advanced to the next round of the UEFA Cup football tournament while defending champion CSKA Moscow of Russia has been eliminated.

The Italian club Roma, Bolton of England, the Swiss team Basel and Heerenveen of the Netherlands advanced Wednesday. With one day remaining in the group stage, 17 clubs have qualified for the knockout phase of European soccer's second-tier competition. Another eight teams relegated from the Champions League will join them and the final seven clubs will be decided Thursday.

CSKA Moscow, which plays Thursday, was eliminated when Heerenveen claimed the final berth from Group-F with a 2-1 victory over Levski Sofia.
