French filmmaker Philippe de Broca, who made such notable films as "King of Hearts" and "That Man from Rio," has died at the age of 71.

The newspaper Le Parisien says he died of cancer in a hospital near Paris Friday night.

Mr. de Broca got his start in the 1950s as an assistant to directors Claude Chabrol and Francois Truffaut.
