French police have fired tear gas to disperse hundreds of protesters near the site of the G-8 summit in the spa town of Evian.

Police say they dispersed the crowd after demonstrators threw rocks at a building in Annemasse where the French Socialist party was meeting. Some protesters say the Socialists are not radical enough. The French news agency says the Socialist party canceled its meeting after the scuffle.

It is the first reported incident involving the thousands of demonstrators who have converged in France to protest the meeting of the world's seven leading industrialized nations plus Russia.

Those opposed to the summit, which begins Sunday, are demonstrating against globalization, capitalism and other issues.
