Gambia's president says large quantities of oil have recently been discovered in waters off the small West African country.

Gambian media quoted Yahya Jammeh as saying a western company made the discovery while studying Atlantic seabed off Gambia's coast. He did not name the company.

Mr. Jammeh also did not say how much oil was found, but said the discovery will lead to what he called a "harvest of prosperity" for Gambia, one of the world's poorest countries.

Mr. Jammeh said an offshore rig will begin pumping small amounts of oil by the end of this year.
