An Iranian official says his country will pull out of an international nuclear treaty if Western nations pressure Iran to give up its nuclear program.

Iranian media Wednesday quote nuclear negotiator Sirus Naseri as saying if Iran is pressured or threatened, it will pull out of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and move its nuclear activities underground.

Iran and several European nations are considering a proposal aimed at avoiding a showdown later this month when the U.N. nuclear agency meets to discuss Iran's controversial nuclear program.  Neither side has discussed its specifics, but U.N. officials say they are cautiously optimistic about the proposal.

Western nations want Iran to halt its uranium enrichment program, which they say could be used to build nuclear weapons.  Iran insists its nuclear program is peaceful.
