Palestinian medics say Israeli artillery fire killed six people in a northern Gaza town Monday.

They say an Israeli shell exploded near an apartment building in Beit Lahiya, killing three people.  Shelling a short time later killed two more Palestinians.  A third attack killed a five year old girl.

Israeli military officials say the army fired shells after Palestinian militants fired at least six rockets into Israel.

More than 100 Palestinians have been killed since Israel began operations in the Gaza Strip to stop militants from firing rockets and free an Israeli soldier abducted in late June.

Last week, Israel warned Palestinian civilians that homes used to hide weapons or militants could be attacked.

Israel withdrew from the Gaza Strip last year, after 38 years of occupation.
