Loud explosions have rocked the Liberian town of Brewerville, twenty kilometers northwest of the capital, Monrovia.
Residents fleeing the town say rebels of the Liberians United For Reconciliation and Democracy, or LURD, attacked in an effort to push their way into the capital.
English to Africa reporter Josephine Kamara spoke with reporter Winston Monboe, who?s been traveling in the direction of Brewerville. He says hundreds of people have fled the area, which has been hosting thousands of internally displaced Liberians.
Winston says the LURD advance could be significant during upcoming talks between the rebels and the government in Mali. He said it will put them in a good position to press their demands.
