World number one women's tennis player Amelie Mauresmo of France has defeated Justine Henin-Hardenne of Belgium to win the Wimbledon championship in London.

Mauresmo, the top seed, overcame a first set loss to beat Henin-Hardenne in three sets, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. She is the first French player to take the title at the All England Club since Suzanne Lenglen in 1925.

It was the second time this year Mauresmo has faced Henin-Hardenne in a major tournament final. The French player won the Australian Open title in January when Henin-Hardenne had to withdraw.

The men's final is Sunday when world number one Roger Federer takes on two-time French Open champion Rafael Nadal of Spain.
