Challiss McDonough joined VOA in 1998 as the first Charles Kuralt Fellow in International Broadcasting. Since then, she has reported from three continents, as well as working as a writer, producer and newscaster for VOA in Washington.

Challiss was thrilled to move to Johannesburg in May of 2000, when she became VOA's Southern Africa Correspondent. She loves to travel, and tries to spend as much time exploring the region as possible.

Challiss has also worked in public radio and Internet journalism. In her previous career, she was a theater technician and lighting designer.

Challiss holds a bachelor's degree in English from Virginia Commonwealth University and attended graduate school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she studied journalism. She remains an avid fan of Tar Heel basketball.
