A Mexican police chief has been ambushed and shot dead in the border city of Nuevo Laredo.

Authorities say Commander Victor Berrones died Tuesday when gunmen attacked the vehicle in which he was traveling. Another officer with him was also killed, along with at least one of the suspected assailants.

The incident took place on a highway leading to the airport in Nuevo Laredo. Authorities recovered at least 100 bullet casings as well as rifles at the scene.

Nuevo Laredo has been plagued for years by violence between gangs fighting for control of lucrative drug smuggling routes into the U.S.
