Mexican authorities have cleared a Lebanese-born British citizen arrested earlier this week as a possible terror suspect.

Mexican police had arrested Amer Haykel in the northern state of Baja California. The police said U.S. officials had linked him to extremist groups connected to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

Mexican immigration officials said Wednesday that Mr. Haykel does not represent a threat to national security and is not wanted by authorities in any country.

Officials say Mr. Haykel has simply been in Mexico as a tourist for a several days.

Mexican authorities have authorized Mr. Haykel's release.
