In Major League Baseball, the Boston Red Sox needed extra innings, but finally beat the visiting New York Yankees after blowing a six-run lead built against star Yankee pitcher Roger Clemens.

The game ended in the 11th inning on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly by Carlos Baerga, giving Boston the 9-8 decision.

Clemens gave up seven runs before he was pulled in the fourth inning. New York came back with five runs in the seventh, but still lost their second straight game to Boston, and fifth in six games this season against the rival Red Sox.

In another American League game Friday, Chicago's Mark Buehrle became the league's first eight-game winner, as the White Sox crushed visiting Detroit 12-1, snapping the Tigers' six-game winning streak.

The Seattle Mariners beat Baltimore 6-2, leaving the Orioles winless in 14 games played over three seasons at Seattle's Safeco Field. Minnesota's Rick Reed tossed a three-hitter as the Twins beat the host Anaheim Angels 5-1.

In the other American League games Friday, the Athletics edged the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 9-8 in Oakland. And the Cleveland Indians ended a four-game losing streak with a 5-2 victory over the Blue Jays in Toronto.

In the National League, New York batters stood and watched as Florida pitcher Vic Darensbourg walked four of five Mets that came to the plate in the bottom of the 10th inning, giving New York a 5-4 win over the Marlins.

Arizona pitcher Curt Schilling is baseball's first nine-game winner as the Diamondbacks crushed the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers 14-3.

The Chicago Cubs scored twice in the top of the 11th inning to beat the Houston Astros 5-4, giving the Cubs their fourth straight win and handing the Astros their fifth straight loss.

Atlanta scored seven runs in the bottom of the third inning on the way to beating the Cincinnati Reds 11-2. The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the visiting Saint Louis Cardinals 5-2. The Expos got by the Philadelphia Phillies 4-1 in Montreal.

In the other National League games Friday, The Milwaukee Brewers downed the visiting San Diego Padres 6-2. And the Colorado Rockies beat the San Francisco Giants 8-5 in Denver.
