In major-league baseball action, the St. Louis Cardinals crushed the Atlanta Braves, 11-3, in a battle of National League division leaders.

The Cardinals' Albert Pujols hit a two-run home run and became the first player in the history of the majors with 30 or more homers in each of his first five seasons. 

St. Louis' home victory Friday also snapped an eight-game winning streak by Atlanta pitcher John Smoltz.

In the American League, the Oakland Athletics won for the eighth time in their last nine games, edging the Royals in Kansas City, 5-4.  Oakland rallied from a three-run deficit to hand the Royals their eighth straight loss.
