Boston captain Joe Thornton scored in overtime to give the Bruins a 2-1 win over the Detroit Red Wings in Saturday's National Hockey League play.

Thornton scored midway through the five-minute extra session to lift the Bruins on their home ice. The victory is Boston's third in a row.

Montreal defenseman Sheldon Souray had a goal and five assists in the Canadiens' 8-0 rout of the struggling Pittsburgh Penguins. Souray's performance in Pittsburgh set a single-game club record for points by a defenseman.

All-Star goalie Martin Brodeur of New Jersey made 25 saves for his league-leading ninth shut out of the season, as the defending Stanley Cup champion Devils blanked the Toronto Maple Leafs 1-0.

Edmonton goalie Tommy Salo notched his 200th NHL win, stopping 26 shots in a 3-0 Oilers victory over the Philadelphia Flyers. It was the 35th shutout of Salo's career. Meanwhile, San Jose goalie, Evgeni Nabokov, got his 100th career win, making 31 saves in the Sharks' 5-2 defeat of the Atlanta Thrashers.

In other NHL games Saturday, the New York Rangers scored all of their goals in the third period, then held on to beat the New York Islanders 3-2 in a cross town match up.

Colorado's Alex Tanguay scored two of three power play goals in the second period to lead the Avalanche to a 4-2 win over the Dallas Stars. Nashville's Jordin Tootoo had a power play goal and an assist in the Predators' 3-1 victory over the Saint Louis Blues.

Calgary sniper Jarome Iginla scored a pair of goals and added an assist, as the Flames trounced the Florida Panthers 4-2. Los Angeles rallied twice to tie the Columbus Blue Jackets 2-2.
