The Sabres are just one win away from the NHL record set by the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1993, after beating the Montreal Canadiens Monday, 4-1.

Atlanta's Ilya Kovalchuk scored three power-play goals to lead the Thrashers to a 6-3 win over the Florida Panthers.

Colorado scored five goals in the second period in Denver, giving the Avalanche a 6-1 victory over the Los Angeles Kings.

In the other NHL games Monday, the San Jose Sharks eased by the Columbus Blue Jackets, 3-0. The Dallas Stars edged the Vancouver Canucks, 2-1. And, the Edmonton Oilers eclipsed the Phoenix Coyotes, 5-2.
