In the National ice Hockey League, the Dallas Stars have fired coach Ken Hitchcock, despite his leading the franchise to five straight division titles and the Stanley Cup championship.

Assistant coach Rick Wilson has been named as an interim replacement. Also Friday, General Manager Bob Gainey reassigned himself as a consultant and named assistant Doug Armstrong to take his place.

The 50-year-old Hitchcock has a record of 277 wins, 160 losses and 60 ties since taking over the Stars in the last part of the 1995-96 season. He guided Dallas to its first Stanley Cup championship in 1999.

This season, the Stars have 23 wins, 17 losses and six draws, and are in second place in the NHL's Pacific Division.
